After an incident last year involving former English teacher and theatre director Alexandra McLean sleeping with an underage student, she faced a variety of issues involving the legal system.

McLean was charged with two accounts of sexual assault by a person in position of trust. After several requested continuances and reschedule hearings, McLean ended her battle with the legal system on March 29. Although she entered two quality pleas of misdemeanors, she faces to no jail times.

McLean was sentenced to deferred judgment by the court that will last a duration of two years. Along with this she also faces a guilty plea without deferred judgment to misdemeanor second-degree official misconduct. This means that even after she finishes probation, the charge will not be dismissed.

In accordance to her supervised probation, McLean is not allowed to contact children under the age of 18 and she may not contact the victim for that duration as well. She is also being required to register as a sex offender.

As part of her supervised probation, all other terms of the probation are in the hands up her probation officer.

“Address Not Found”, “Unable to connect”, “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage” and similar titles plague the wireless Internet of Englewood public schools.

“The Internet makes it hard to do my work and I hate it” student Keenan Cowger (10) said.

As the Englewood increases its technology usage, many teachers switch from using paper and pencil to using the web for learning opportunities, but when the wireless Internet doesn’t work as hoped, it often causes issues for the students of Englewood.

“In my classes we use the internet for a lot of the things we do, but when I can’t get the internet to work, my grade suffers,” Cowger said.

This is a problem that will hopefully be fixed soon because many of the students in Englewood rely on technology and rely on the Internet access.

“I don’t think it is fair that my grade should suffer because the school has bad Internet connection” student Jacob Medina (10) said.

AT&T Hack-a-Thon was not only Boulder’s first, but a first for Englewood Schools too. The two day event was quite the learning experience for several of the students invited on the trip.

“I met some cool people and learned a ton of new stuff.” Trevor Willson (9) said.

After the 45-minute drive up to Longmont, the competition began at Altona Middle School. Seven students from Englewood accompanied by two chaperones entered the competition a curious, but little skeptical.

“We were really unsure about everything. We didn’t know what to expect,” Paige McDowell (10) said.

After everyone got started, the men running the AT&T Hack-A-Thon asked people to come up and share their ideas with everyone. They asked for the ideas to be educational.

Using one of the companies that sponsored the Hack-a-Thon, Sphero, Englewood came up with a game plan. Sphero is the worlds first robotic ball according Amazon.com.

“After hearing about the ball [Sphero], I thought it would be cool to make a soccer app for it. So when no one on our team had an idea, I decided to pitch my idea. I pitched it to the room of about 60 people and about 3 people from 3 other schools decided to join our team.” STEM teacher William Gilmore said.

Building the actual app turned out to be a whole new experience.

“We only had 18 hours so we decided to break up into mini teams that did different things. We had a coding team, a design team and a video team,” McDowell said.

The awards show turned out to be a great experience for Englewood.

“We won 1st place in the Sphero division and 3rd in overall student app. We were competing against 15 teams that ranged from high school students to professionals,” Librarian Amanda Workman said.

Overall, all the students that went felt a sense of pride.

“I would easily do it again. I can’t wait for next year,” Willson said.

Throughout the halls of EHS, the amount of bright orange and blue Bronco jerseys with the number 18 or 58 on them have drastically increased since the 2011-2012 NFL season. Since the Denver Broncos signed Peyton Manning and the consecutive wins have been stacking up, the fans been stacking up as well.

“The amount of Bronco fans has definitely gotten bigger since they have been dominating lately. Especially now that we have a genius as a quarterback, Peyton, he has put Denver back on the map. But, because of the success of the Broncos, there is definitely a lot more bandwagons here in Englewood,” Ric Scott Neff (11) said.

Without success, the numbers would decrease. Every NFL football season, fans increase or decrease depending on the success of a team. True fans are those who stay with their team through thick and thin. Bandwagons are not really liked by true fans. In fact, they might be titled as “annoying” or “posers”.

There are many conflicts between fans simply because of people that hop on the bandwagon whenever a team does well. The concern is whether or not they will stick with the team even through the rough spots.

The clock struck 9:30 a.m., as shattered glass spread across a hidden area of the Sandy Hook Elementary School grounds. Oblivious to the creeping danger, just around the corner, classes remained in session. It was at this time 20-year-old gunman Adam Lanza entered the building, and opened fire.

This is not an article to explain the vicious tragedy that took place at Sandy Hook, in Newtown, Connecticut, because in the most simplistic sense, there is no explaining it.

No one truly knows why Lanza stole the lives of 20 children, 6 adults, his mother and himself, and we may never know. We will never understand the terror experienced at Sandy Hook, or the experiences that led Lanza to this gruesome crime. We will never knew if it could have been prevented; however, we what we do know is this shooting left a number of families grieving, a small town devastated and a shook nation concerned.

No words can justify Lanza’s decision, or fix what has already been done, but there is no doubt lessons can be learned. It clearly displays the moral flaws that are harming today’s society, especially adolescents. It shows the problems in safety and security that plague the public school system. It is a constant reminder that even the smallest random act of kindness can be a strand of hope for one to cling onto.

The Sandy Hook Shooting, and every other school shooting, taught us that by reaching out, one can contribute to much needed change in a country destroyed by its own violence.

Ever try losing 25 pounds in a week? Not many people do. However, this is one of the struggles that wrestlers face constantly. Maybe they do not always lose 25 pounds, but they are forced to keep a constant watch on their weight and often times they are forced to push their limits before even stepping on the mat.

“Wrestlers go to extremes to make or break weight, and it can be very detrimental to their internal organs,” Athletic Director Randall Neal said.

To determine which weight class a wrestler is in, they must “weigh in” before the season begins and every time they wrestle. A lot of wrestlers go to extremes to lose weight, so they do not have to wrestle bigger opponents.

“I knew a lot of wrestlers in college that would starve, or purge themselves in order to lose weight,” Neal said.

Another popular way to lose weight for the winter season is the trash bag method.

“The Trash bag method is when wrestlers wear rubber suits, or trash bags, while they are working out in order to sweat more and lose more weight,” Neal said.

The Trash bag method is a popular way to shave some unwanted pounds; however, it has proved fatal in more than one case. In 1998 the N.C.A.A put heavier restrictions on the methods wrestlers used for shedding weight, due to the fatalities of three collegiate wrestlers that died due to complications while wearing rubber suits, according to the New York Times.

On top of the already barred laxatives, fluid restrictions, purging and hot rooms (rooms above 79 degrees), the N.C.A.A announced the prohibition of rubber suits, saunas for water loss and diuretics. Although more drastic measures are taken at the collegiate level to make weight, high school wrestlers are also taking dangerous steps in the direction toward their desired weight class.

“I don’t have to lose any weight this season, but last year I would spit a lot or even throw up in order to make it,” Wrestler Zach Scally (12) said.

One senior wrestler in particular, Damasjae Currington, is taking a more healthy approach to making weight. Currington had to lose 21-23 lbs before his first weigh in.

“I am working harder in practice and jogging every night in sweats,” Currington (12) said.

Another healthy way to lose weight is diet.

“It is all about eating healthy and portion sizes,” Wrestler Nolan Severa (12) said.

You open your eyes and it is still dark outside. You roll over and peer at the clock. 7:02 A.M. stares back at you, another day started off later than you expected. Pushing down the covers, you get out of bed and your room is filled with frigid air. You dread getting dressed and heading to school. On days like this, your motivation is ice cold, and all you want to do is crawl back into bed.

Along with the winter comes cold weather and lazy attitudes from students. Often times, if the temperature outside dips, some students simply do not want to go to school.

“I hate going to school in the winter. When it’s cold outside and I’m in class, I just wanna go to sleep,” Alandra DeAndrea (9) said.

Freshmen are not the only ones suffering from the “Winter Blues”.

“If it’s cold, I don’t want to go to school. My brother and I walk from Broadway, and that’s no fun when it’s freezing,” Tyler Pedersen (12) said.

The day drags on. Your teachers hand out assignments and give the class homework. It puts you in an even worse mood. You really do not want to do it. You want nothing more than to curl up in bed.

“I never feel like doing anything. I’m always tired and I don’t have any motivation,” DeAndrea explains.
